Words! the pathway to thoughts. Today, I was asked to say a few words about myself. And I realized that those words would be different on any given day. Today, I am passionate, compassionate and flawed.
Sometimes, we write or say things that fit the exact moment, the unique present. It’s possible that the words that are proper at that moment will never fit again.
Not long ago, I posted that I wanted to talk to another lampworker once a week. I had no idea that there was a person in the world that would read that and consider it even possible. But, Fiona did. She saw my posting as her chance to connect. To connect us, from across an entire ocean. Can you imagine?
Somehow, Fiona has a free hour of international long distance calling. And I am the beneficiary of that hour….or 55 minutes just to be sure it doesn’t go over. I have been showered with a blessing. And it has a British accent!
We’ve only talked twice. But, it’s been wonderful. We have much in common. The first being glass, then children, then books, then being women of a similar generation.
Fiona and I are lampworkers, and we do not make lamps. We, and maybe 6 or 7 thousand of us worldwide, make glass beads. We do it to fill our time with wonder. The results are not as fabulous as the time spent. We are masters of the elements at the moment we wrangle the torch.
Fiona, thank you. Two words, I know. But, the power of gratitude is in the giving. I am uplifted by your calls. And challenged to think of topics to make sure you are enjoying yourself. I feel that I cannot tell you enough or listen enough to make sure that we never lose touch again. And all this passion for connection is based on two hours.
Has anyone ever been this fortunate before?

Laurie, thank you… I think the gods may have been smiling on us both when you posted your message and I phoned the first time. The Time Traveller’s Wife is on my to do list.. and dont forget Bernard Cornwell and James Lee Burke
